Phakic IOLs

A phakic IOL is an intra-ocular lens which is fixed inside the eye to correct myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. Our preferred phakic IOL is the Artisan/Verisyse lens (note the Artisan and Verisyse are both identical intraocular lenses manufactured by Ophtec and Verisyse is the market name for the device when distributed by AMO). Since this is an additive procedure the ability to focus for near with the natural lens inside the young eye is preserved. The lens can be implanted under a local anaesthetic. Phakic IOL implantation is an excellent option for patients whose eyes are not suitable for laser eye surgery. It certainly provides superior quality vision for patients who have very high prescriptions.

INTACS

INTACS are semi-circles of PMMA designed to be inserted within the cornea. They are implanted under a local anaesthetic. The INTACS flatten the curve of the central cornea. This is beneficial for patients with keratoconus. It can also correct myopia in patients who are not suitable for laser eye surgery.

Cross-linking (CR-3)

Cross-linking uses roboflavin and ultraviolet light to chemically bond the front layers of collagen in the cornea together. This makes the cornea 300% stiffer and stops the progression of keratoconus.
